Night Dive at
Hol Chan
Experience Hol Chan Marine Reserve after sunset, when familiar reef scenery transforms and nocturnal marine life begins to emerge.
When the sun goes down, the reef changes.
Hol Chan may be familiar by day, but after sunset the reef takes on a completely different character. A night dive gives certified divers the opportunity to experience marine life and underwater behavior that is rarely seen during daylight hours.
Diving Hol Chan After Dark
Your night begins with check-in approximately 30 minutes before sunset. Departure is timed around sunset, so exact times vary throughout the year.
Before entering the water, your divemaster will provide a detailed night-dive briefing covering communication, dive-light procedures, entry and exit procedures, maximum depth and the planned route through Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Once underwater, your dive light reveals details of the reef that are easy to miss during the day, while nocturnal species become more active.
Look for species that become more active after sunset, including octopus, lobster, crabs, squid and eels.
Familiar coral formations feel completely different when explored by dive light.
Under the right conditions, divers may also experience naturally occurring bioluminescence in the water.
Marine-life sightings and bioluminescence are natural phenomena and cannot be guaranteed.
